Expect fun-filled Class III–IV rapids at the start, followed by a more relaxing float later in the trip. Back at base, lunch is prepared for you, and a video of your adventure is included.

What Is the Penobscot River Trip Like?

The Penobscot is the wild ride of the two featured trips. It is described as a train of exciting rapids rushing through boulders, drops, and holes, with incredible views of Mt. Katahdin in the background. This is the trip for guests looking for a more intense Class IV–V whitewater experience and one of the most exhilarating rafting runs in Maine.

What Does the Trip Structure Look Like?

Both trips are guided and include transportation to the river and all required safety gear. The Kennebec is a 4–6 hour trip with a 9:00 AM check-in and a minimum age of 10. The Penobscot is a 5–7 hour trip with a 7:00 AM check-in, is available Friday through Monday, and requires guests to be at least 14 years old and 100 lbs.

What Is the International Scale of River Difficulty?

Not sure whether a trip is right for your group? The International Scale of River Difficulty is the universally accepted system for rating whitewater rivers and rapids. Developed by the American Whitewater Association, it runs from Class I (calm, easy) to Class VI (near-impassable). Understanding the scale takes the guesswork out of choosing the right river and sets realistic expectations for first-timers and experienced paddlers alike.

  1. Class I — Easy: Fast-moving water with riffles and small waves. Few obstructions, all easily avoided. No significant risk of injury.
  2. Class II — Novice: Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels visible without scouting. Some maneuvering required. Risk of capsize low.
  3. Class III — Intermediate: Moderate, irregular waves that may be difficult to avoid; capable of swamping an open canoe. Complex maneuvers required in fast current. Scouting is advisable for inexperienced paddlers.
  4. Class IV — Advanced: Intense, powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water. Large, unavoidable waves and holes may be present. Scouting essential; rescue difficult. Risk to swimmers is moderate to high.
  5. Class V — Expert: Extremely long, obstructed, or very violent rapids with added risk. Rescue conditions very difficult. Significant hazard to life in the event of a mishap. Only experts with full rescue support should attempt.
  6. Class VI — Extreme / Exploratory: Nearly impassable. For teams of experts only, after extensive study and with all safety precautions in place. Represents the outer limit of navigability.

The scale is not linear — the jump from Class IV to Class V is far greater than the jump from Class II to Class III. River grades also shift with water levels: a Class III rapid at normal flow can become Class IV or higher after heavy rain. Our guides assess conditions daily and will always brief your group on current river conditions before departure.
