Maine Canoe Trip Overview
Pre-Trip Planning

- Experience Required: Yes, we highly recommend a canoe and camping experience before venturing on your own. These are remote areas without emergency services.
- Self-rescue: You should be prepared to handle wilderness mishaps, such as an overturned canoe.
- Weather and Time: Plan your trip carefully and add extra days for wind, when you may need to stay off the water.
What to bring
- Hygiene Essentials: Toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, towel and toilet paper.
- Everyday Needs: a multi-tool, sunglasses, extra headlamp, compass, extra batteries, camera, sunscreen, bug spray
- Comfort Items: a power bank for electronics, inflatable pillow and earplugs snacks.
- First Aid: Include a comprehensive first aid kit, prescription glasses, and any necessary daily medications.
Safety and Navigation
- Canoe Safety Gear: Whistle, PFD, rope, spare paddle,
- PFD: Each person is required to have a personal flotation device, preferable worn, children 10 and under are required to wear their PFD.
- Communication Devices: Cell phones have no signal in many remote areas of Maine. For remote trips, if you think you need communication, bring GPS communicator, SPOT device, or satellite phone. (Garmin products are available for purchase in our store.)
- Maps: River trip maps
- Fire: waterproof matches & lighter
Licenses and Permits
- Permits: On certain rivers there are permits and access fees that must be paid. See details on the river page you choose.
- Fishing: A fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older. Also be sure to check the laws for the body of water you are paddling. Its preferable to purchase online, or buy one at our store on arrival.
Our group rented canoes and related equipment from them for a 7 day Allagash River adventure in June 2022. Their equipment was excellent quality, and they provided for all our needs while showing a great deal of patience!

Penobscot River West Branch
This is our most popular overnight canoe trip! The Penobscot offers something for the entire family, including canoeing, kayaking, hiking, fishing, camping, exploring, photography, and sightseeing. Your adventure starts at Roll Dam on the Penobscot River, where you’ll paddle downstream to remote wilderness campsites on the river and Lobster and Chesuncook lakes. Each site has picnic tables, a fire ring, and is located in a beautiful wilderness setting. This is also an excellent trip for wildlife viewing opportunities, like the Maine Moose, Deer, Beaver, Otter, many species of Birds, Loon, Grouse, Ducks, and Eagles are common. On this canoe trip, graced with beautiful views of Mt. Katahdin. The Maine moose frequents this watershed in search of the abundant aquatic plant growth, so sightings on the river trip are common.

Allagash River Canoe Trip
The Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a stunning 92.5-mile stretch of unspoiled wilderness, offers the perfect serene setting for a quintessential adventure, via our guided Maine canoe trips. Established in 1966 and designated a National Wild and Scenic River in 1970, the Allagash includes lakes, rivers, and ponds, weaving through the North Maine Woods. Once a logging highway, today it draws paddlers, anglers, and nature lovers seeking Maine’s untamed beauty.
The Allagash’s landscapes teem with wildlife: watch bald eagles nest in towering pines, glimpse moose along the shores, and listen to loons calling over evening waters. From serene lakes to thrilling Class II whitewater, the Allagash Wilderness Waterway offers varied paddling, making it ideal for extended overnight canoe trips. Eighty designated campsites, each equipped with fire rings, picnic tables, and outhouses, are a perfect wilderness multi-day trip.
Anglers can enjoy prime fishing for brook trout, lake trout, and whitefish.

West Outlet Kennebec River
